I love a commission that blends function with flair - and this one for Absolute Artisans ticked every box.
Let's rewind to March 2023, around six months after Absolute Artisans first opened its doors...
Based in a beautiful old former cow barn in Wimborne, Dorset, Absolute Artisans is a local destination for all things handcrafted. Artisans (myself included!) rent space here to showcase their work in a curated, creative environment. So when they asked me to create two custom light columns for their entrance, I knew it had to feel bold, welcoming, and beautifully artisanal.
The Design
Each column was made from 3mm thick heavy-duty mild steel, precision cut with 'Absolute Artisans' name running vertically down the face. We added a striking leaf pattern throughout - a subtle nod to the country surroundings and the faux foliage that can be found hanging throughout the barn.
At over 1m tall, these columns aren’t just decorative. They were designed to hold planters on top and come alive at night, with the option to add internal lighting that glows through the cut steel.
The Installation
One column sits on either side of the barn door, creating a sense of symmetry. Whether daylight or dusk, they guide and welcome you in.
Why I Loved This Build
As both a maker and a resident seller at Absolute Artisans, this commission felt personal. It was about more than just creating signage - it was about giving the space a sense of identity and pride. The columns are solid, sculptural, and rooted in the same ethos that runs through everything here: independent, quality craftsmanship.
If you’re ever nearby, swing by and see them in action. Better yet - step inside and explore all the incredible work from our local makers.
